NPC assails Quezon PNP for ignoring MOA
in the arrest of Mr. Gemi Formaran & 2 others
THE National Press Club is calling out the Quezon Provincial Police Office, in particular, elements of the Tayabas PNP, for the arrest early today of Quezon-based journalist and Journal Group correspondent, Gemi Formaran, and two other members of the press, for libel.
“Although journalists would have to face to the consequences of their actions in pursuit of their profession such as being sued for libel, still, the immediate arrest of Mr. Formaran and his companions was in violation of the long-standing agreement between the NPC and the DILG/PNP/AFP on this matter,” NPC Pres. Paul M. Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez reminded that under the MOA, the police should first inform the NPC before serving the arrest warrant to any of its members on work-related cases.
Formaran, he pointed out, is a regular member of the NPC.
“We’ll certainly raise this incident during the next meeting of the PTFoMS,” he added.
Gutierrez was referring to the Presidential Task Force on Media Security where the NPC sits as one of the members.
“At this point, we hope that no further violations of Mr. Formaran’s rights would be violated such as his right to post bail and right to have a counsel,” Gutierrez added. ###
