NPC ALARMED OVER THREAT OF DRUNK LAS PIÑAS COUNCILOR TO ‘SHOOT’ PHOTOJOURNALIST
THE National Press Club (NPC) has expressed alarm over the alleged threat of Las Piñas City District 2 councilor, Danilo Hernandez, to “shoot” a news photographer who chanced on him after figuring in a vehicular accident past midnight last Saturday, April 22, 2017.
“We find this incident alarming as it showed that the ‘culture of impunity’ that has resulted to so many tragedies involving members of the press remains ingrained in the minds of those in position of authority,” said NPC president Paul M. Gutierrez of the Journal Group.
Gutierrez said the NPC was informed of the incident yesterday by Senate reporter and NPC member, Jojo Sicat, to whom the victim, Jason Drew, photographer of ‘Pilipino Mirror,’ initially bared his encounter with Hernandez.
Accordingly, Drew said he chanced upon a vehicular accident along the Alabang-Zapote Road in Las Piñas City past midnight last Saturday and, as part of his job, he stopped to take some pictures and conduct a cursory interview among those involved.
Drew averred it was at this juncture that Hernadez, who was allegedly drunk, started cursing and badmouthing him while also threatening to shoot him dead.
“Sino ka ba, putang ina, kapag hindi ka tumigil babarilin kita puro kayo programa ng programa wala naman kayo naitutulong” (‘Who are you, son of whore; if you don’t stop with what you are doing, I will shoot you. All you know is to have (news) program but you are not doing any help,’), Hernandez allegedly said.
To prevent the situation from worsening, Drew said he just left the scene of the accident with Hernandez still bragging about his being the city councilor of Las Piñas who allegedly further warned Drew: “Magkikita pa tayo, putang ina mo!” (We’ll see each other again, you son of a whore!’).
Much later, Drew said he managed to confirm that Hernandez is, indeed, an incumbent member of the city council for the 2ND district. The victim added Hernandez merely laughed at him when they managed to talk briefly by phone.
Gutierrez said he has already coordinated with Malacañang thru the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) for a separate, independent probe of the incident.
“We also call on the leadership of Las Piñas City under Mayor Imelda Aguilar to censure councilor Hernandez should the accusations against him proved true. Such rude behavior has no place in a civilized society,” Gutierrez added. ###
